Maukatua (Mount Sefton) in the foreground and Aoraki (Mount Cook) in the background catch the light from the rising moon before it's so bright as to outshine the stars. ![A mountain goat makes its own Grays Peak summit push on a clear summer day in Colorado. The goat walked with such ease up the Rocky Mountain's tenth highest peak that it almost seemed to be enjoying it. Meanwhile the rest of us suffered from a lack of oxygen. It's not hard to imagine why - if you take a good look at these impressive alpine animals you can see how their leg muscles appear to be rock hard muscle. For the same reason they climb mountains with ease, it's a fine idea to keep your distance from them. Located a short ways outside of Aspen, these peaks are just too photogenic and accessible to pass on. My visit was in the shoulder season, after summer crowds and before fall colors, and so I was granted a quieter morning with less visitors, though I was certainly not alone this day. ![Late afternoon light paints a tranquil scene in the Sierra Nevadas. In fact, this scene was so nice that my hiking partner and I decided to take the next day off, just to we could sit at this peaceful spot a while longer. Everything about it was magnetic. However, our expectations went unfulfilled as we awoke in the middle of the night to raindrops on our face and rushed transition to the tent... the beginning of what would be an entire "down day" spent inside this one-person cocoon.
